HOBBY SHOP: FLOWER ARRANGING WITH MAGIC

I discovered the magic of flower arranging many years ago after I’d lived in NYC for a while. I recall an intense desire to add some life and nature to my space, in addition to plants. I thought having fresh flowers was such an indulgent “rich person” thing - until one day I decided to treat myself to a selection of bodega flowers. I brought them home and they felt a little “basic” … they needed to be transformed. I gathered up any little jars, pretty glasses and vases I had lying around then I went into what I can only describe as a meditative state and when I snapped back to earth I was pleased, very pleased and dare I say addicted to the ritual of flower arranging.

I thought having fresh flowers was such an indulgent “rich person” thing - until one day I decided to treat myself to a selection of bodega flowers.

This new hobby became a ritual and a routine. My space was never without a couple of large arrangements and tiny ones scattered about. Tiny ones in the shower, on my vanity, next to my bed, on the kitchen counter, everywhere I looked there was a little surprise of living, breathing beauty. Oh, and it didn’t cost a fortune either. I would pride myself to see how far I could stretch 10-15 bucks…and between bodega selections and Trader Joe’s I could make 10 or so arrangements, mmmhmmm.

Since then, I’ve upped my arranging game by adding one of my other true loves, pretty magical crystals and stones. Here’s how:

1. Grab a bunch or two of any flower that speaks to you, whatever you like.

2. Find a pretty glass or glass vase that’s large enough to hold a crystal or two.

3. Fill with fresh cold water, then trim your flowers to size. Try single stems or a bigger bunch, as long as you can still see the crystal inside you’re doing it right.

4. Last but not least, sprinkle them all around your space and luxuriate in the magic you just created.
