MOON JOURNALING 101: HOW TO LIVE BY THE MOON
By Chelsea Broughton
I'm a "look at the moon!" type of girl. No matter what phase it's in. I love the moon. I feel connected to the moon. I genuinely live by the moon.
The rise and fall of the tides are caused by gravitational forces of the moon…but have you ever thought about human bodies being made up of about 60% water? The moon influences our moods as it does the ocean. Wild, right?
As the moon changes between phases, and moves between signs, our emotions are impacted. Being able to track this allows us to channel the moon's energy in a productive way and to understand ourselves at a deeper level.
Do you journal? Writing in a journal has been my favorite form of expression since I was a kid. I could never have too many notebooks. Moon journaling is essentially the same as journaling, but it is done with the intention of understanding your lunar rhythm.
Try to do at least a page or two a day. The most effective way to moon journal is to write as often as you can. Even if it's just a sentence or two, just write.
At the top of each page write the date, the phase of the moon and what sign the moon is in. I use the Time Passages app to know where the moon is at at all times (along with the rest of the universe, but that's a whole other post). Then, I journal. I write how I'm feeling, I write how my mood has changed since yesterday, I write my goals, I write my dreams, I write it all. Sounds witchy and maybe a little crazy, but if you commit, you will begin to see a pattern.
Without getting into an entire astrology lesson that I’m not exactly qualified to give, every planet moves through each of the twelve zodiac signs throughout time. The moon moves through each sign for 2-3 days at a time and we will feel the energy of that sign. For example, when the moon is in Pisces, you may find yourself crying for no reason (I am a Pisces and can confirm that this is something we do). This can depend on what your moon sign is, which you can figure out with this Birth Chart Calculator.
Like my high school self, the moon goes through many phases. Each phase has their own mood and vibe as well:
New Moon: It’s all about new beginnings during this phase. Set your intentions and manifest your vision into reality!
Waxing Crescent: Time to gain, whether that is opportunity, money, insight, the possibilities are endless. Do the groundwork.
First Quarter: Obstacles will come up. Push through, babe! You got this. Take action and make big decisions.
Waxing Gibbous: Reevaluate your situation. This is a good time to change direction or make some compromises if that’s what feels right.
Full Moon: The moon is lit up and so are we! This phase gives us energy, crazy dreams, new opportunities, extreme emotions
Waning Gibbous: What do you have gratitude for? Who do you want to give your love to? You may find yourself spending extra money during this phase!
Last Quarter: Cleanse, cleanse, cleanse. Release what isn’t serving you!
Waning Crescent: You’re tired? You’ve just gone through an entire moon cycle! Take the time to rest and indulge in some self-care.
The moon is one powerful chick and she can be your mentor in manifestation, personal development and creativity.
