5 IRRESISTIBLE BOOK, WINE & CANDLE PAIRINGS TO TRY RIGHT NOW
by Caitlin Heikkila
About six years ago, I started Book & Wine Club, a group that brings women together through two of my favorite things: books and wine. Here’s the premise: I select one book and one wine per month. The groups (in cities all over the country and in Canada) read the book, and then at the end of the month, we meet for a discussion and taste the wine. When selecting our read and our vino, I create a mood. What do we want to drink with a twisty-turny thriller? Something unexpected and a little chilling like a chilled Frappato from Italy. What do we want to read with an elegant historical fiction? Maybe something aromatic and floral like French Viognier.
Now, I’m about to take it one step further, pairing five books with five wines and five candles from Sunday Forever.
Book: Social Creature by Tara Elizabeth Burton
Wine: Château Billeron Bouquey 2015 Saint Emilion, Grand Vin de Bordeaux
A dark tale of Upper East Side socialites deserves a wine from one of the most prestigious regions in the world: Bordeaux. Blackberry, black cherry, coffee, and toastiness notes flow from the glass. It’s perhaps on the nose, but nonetheless, I would pair this with Sunday Forever’s “Rich” candle. Appropriately, it “smells like money, boys, cashmere, and smoke,” all of which can be found in this book and this bottle.
Book: A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles
Wine: Owen Roe Ex Umbris Syrah 2017
A Gentleman in Moscow is a thick novel about a man sentenced to spend the rest of his life in a luxury hotel after being deemed an unrepentant aristocrat. I feel sophisticated just holding this book by Amor Towles. I also feel sophisticated when drinking this earthy, smoky Syrah with a minimalist-chic label from Columbia Valley in Washington. To make it a trio, burn Sunday Forever’s candle “11:11,” which smells like it belongs in a luxury hotel, or at least a fancy apartment.
Book: Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty
Wine: Avinyó Reserva Brut Cava 2015
Nine Perfect Strangers takes place at a remote health resort filled with mindful meditation, deep tissue massage, and mysterious tropical smoothies. Set the scene in your reading nook with a glass of bubbly, like crisp Cava, and a coconut-scented candle from Sunday Forever, “Coconut.” It’s like taking a mini-Island vacation, but beware of some dark turns in this book.
Book: Sourdough by Robin Sloan
Wine: Xión Bodegas y Viñedos Attis Albariño 2017
A San Francisco software engineer becomes a baker with the success of her addictively delicious sourdough bread in Sourdough by Robin Sloan. She wakes in the early morning hours to bake in time to sell the popular bread at the local farmer’s market. Those moments of early solitude remind me of Sunday Forever’s “Morning” candle, a light scent of sage and sea salt. A wine with a slight salinity and yeasty freshness is the ultimate pairing, like Xión Bodegas y Viñedos Attis Albariño 2017
Book: Only in Naples by Katherine Wilson
Wine: Domini Del Leone Valpolicella Classico Ripasso 2014
Candle: Pink Gold
Take an Italian book-wine-candle getaway. Only In Naples is a charming memoir about an American’s three-month adventure abroad, specifically in Naples, Italy. I want to read it while sipping on a glass of Ripasso Valpolicella, a rich and robust wine with a hint of spice that begs for all the Italian cheeses and pasta. Burn Sunday Forever’s “Pink Gold” candle, which smells like an Italian bakery and those adorable almond cookies.
